The Collected Toppi Vol. 1: The Enchanted World Hardcover – 2020
The Collected Toppi Vol. 1: The Enchanted World Hardcover – 2020
Presenting the first in a seven-volume library of works by master illustrator Sergio Toppi.
The first volume, The Enchanted World, contains eleven tales of high fantasy in English for the first time, previously collected as Black & Tans, Krull, and A Minor God.
Eleven AMAZING stories of fantasy, myth and legend, newly translated. This is the first of a seven-volume library of works by master illustrator Sergio Toppi. Consider this from Bill Sienkiewicz: “…his name comes up constantly in headshaking, hushed tones. His talent and oeuvre cast a long shadow, eliciting equal parts awe, reverence, and intimidation…Other artists were amazing, but to me this man’s work was on an entirely different level…powerful, elegant, musical, and as abstract…as detailed…as exaggerated…as realistic…”
Bill goes on to compare Toppi to Joseph Clement Coll, Franklin Booth, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Levine, Giacometti. He talks about how strong an influence Toppi was on his own work. “Composition, value arrangement, line, tone, page layout, storytelling…all these things were–and remain–pure Toppi. I wore his influence on my sleeve. Perhaps in hindsight a tad too much, but if anything, that influence goes a long way to explain the adoration and importance of his work globally and to so many American artists, some of whom still follow in his distinct footsteps today. They are keepers of the flame.”
So much of Toppi’s work has never been translated, or has only been available in limited printings done in France or Italy, where he is from. Here finally is some of his finest material, lovely short tales of irony, each superbly drawn, and starring talking crows and statues, evil witches, warriors, fantasy at its best.
This first volume collects eleven short fantasy tales previously collected as Black & Tans, Krull, and A Minor God
168pgs, 9x12”
